Winter activity
Everything from culture to wellness
Palmy promenades and snowy mountain tops – Merano’s unmistakable landscape is characterised by a unique blend of Alpine and Mediterranean elements. The town’s historical centre offers just as much variety. Take a walk and indulge in retail therapy in the shops and boutiques lined under the medieval arcades, then have a break and sample the local cuisine in one of the many bars and restaurants. Palais Mamming Museum, the Women’s Museum, the Jewish Museum and the Landesfürstlichen Burg (Princely Castle) are all within easy reach and offer fascinating insights into local history and culture. If you are more into outdoor pursuits, all you need to do is take the cable car to Merano 2000, the local mountain and ski area.

In just a few minutes you will find yourself in a snowy wonderland where you can ski, hike, sledge and cross-country ski at your leisure. If your holiday plans include some proper R & R, there’s no better place than the nearby Terme Merano thermal baths, with a choice of indoor and outdoor pools and an expansive sauna area.

Situated just above the spa town, Merano 2000 is the perfect family-friendly ski area. It is reached via South Tyrol’s largest lift facilities, which connect the Naif valley terminal on the town outskirts to the pistes in just 7 minutes. Waiting for you at the top are around 40 kilometres of ski and snowboard pistes at different levels of difficulty. Children can play in the snow and learn the ropes of skiing in the Outdoor Kids’ Camp next to the lift mountain terminal. There is also a natural toboggan run and a cross-country ski trail through a snowy larch wood. Those who prefer to explore the snowscape on foot can do so on Merano 2000’s numerous winter trekking paths, which offer a stunning view extending as far as Mt. Ortles and the Dolomites.
